After Germany was split into East and West the year prior, the United States, Canada, and most Western European countries formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on April 4, 1949 to counter Soviet rule in Europe. A few years later in 1955, the Soviets and Eastern Europe formed the Warsaw Pact in response.
