During the Potsdam Conference on July 17, 1945, the United States and Britain argued over Eastern Europe, which bordered the Soviet Union and was occupied by Soviet troops. Though Soviet dictator Joesph Stalin promised to respect Eastern European rights, the United States and Britain believed he was plotting pro-Communist plans behind their backs.
