Reinsurance Treaty made in June 1887 - 3 yr agreement b/w R and G to promise neutrality in war fought by others unless G attacked F or R attacked A-H; Kaiser gave Caprivi task to renew treaty, but under Holstein’s influence, Caprivi convinced Kaiser renewal was mistake b/c secret treaty w/ R would endanger G’s other alliances so Kaiser lapsed treaty; devastating blow to R, so went to F for support.
