On November 9th, 1989, the Berlin Wall, which split Germany into east and west states, was torn down, signaling the start of the demise of the communist Soviet Union. It came down because of the general disapproval of communism, which was seen as oppressive and inefficient. Florence remembers this, as by then she had left the farm and moved to Avignon, where she was surrounded by more technology and current events.
