1 Mai 1840 Jahr - A schism occurs in the abolition movement
Beschreibung:
In May 1840, members of The American Anti-Slavery Society left the group and formed the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society. The split occurred due to feminism and an unwillingness to participate in government, a position held by William Lloyd Garrison. The new society opposed women in leadership positions and formed the Liberty Party in hopes of making abolitionism a political movement. Leading members of the new society included Arthur Tappan, Lewis Tappan, Samuel Cornish, and Theodore S. Wright.
