Beschreibung:

Student protests broke out in 1985, being caused by poor living conditions and high prices for goods. Workers also striked, expressing further discontent. The criticisms of economic conditions were accompanied by political challenges to the government.

The students blamed the party's distinct Cronyism, desired a clean-cut meritocracy in place. Students were also angry at the corrupt nature of the CCP and called for democracy in China and free speech.

Deng's reaction:
- Deng sided with the hard-line communists, decidely not moving away from Maoist Communist beliefs.
- Deng tightened censorship further, and Deng ordered the arrest of the leaders whom he blamed for the political unrest.
