1 Mai 1893 Jahr - World's Columbian Exposition
Beschreibung:
On May 1, 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition opened to the public in Chicago, Illinois, and continued until October 30. Following the Paris Exposition in 1889, the United States felt the insatiable urge to prove itself, as France had left many countries in its shadow. The Chicago World's Fair was held to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus arriving in America. The centerpiece of the fair was a vast pool of water, which represented the long, oceanic journey that Columbus took to arrive in the New World. The fair was the cause of much American optimism, industrialism, sanitation advances, and architecture. The fair grounds were constructed in the prototype of an actual city, and because most of the buildings were white, it was given the nickname The White City. More than 27 million people visited the fair while it was open. On October 9, known as Chicago Day, the fair set a record for outdoor event attendance with over 700,000 people visiting in just one day.
