On May 6, 1889, the Paris Exposition began in Paris, France. It continued until October 31. It was held during the 100th year anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, which is usually considered to represent the beginning of the French Revolution. During the exposition, the famous Eiffel Tower was unveiled, and it was displayed as the showpiece of the entire fair. The Paris Exposition prompted the establishment of an even more spectacular world fair in Chicago in 1893.
