The Berlin wall was a blockade built around West Berlin during the Cold War by the Soviet Union. Because West Berlin was in Soviet controlled Germany, it was essentially stranded and cut off from it's own allies. The Berlin wall was used as a Soviet political power for many years until 1989 when it was destroyed.
