During the previous fifty or so years, Spain and Portugal had claimed vast amounts of land for themselves, and some land was claimed by both Spain and Portugal. This led to rising tensions between the two kingdoms, so they turned to the Pope to settle the dispute. The Pope decided that any land west of a demarcating line belonged to Spain, and anything East of the line belonged to Portugal.
