With the Truman Doctrine, Truman declared that the United States would provide political, military, and economic aid to democratic nations under threat from external or internal forces. This document changed the direction of U.S. foreign policy, away from its position of withdrawal from any conflicts not involving the United States, to one of potential intervention in international conflicts.
