The Democrats allowed Rutherford B. Hayes to
become President in the Presidential Election of 1876 snafu. In exchange, the Republicans promised to withdraw federal troops from LA & SC. Hayes became President (even though he really lost the election) and the fulfillment of the Republican's promise officially brought an end or death to Reconstruction. The Compromise of 1877 epitomizes the corrupt nature of national politics in the U.S. during the gilded age.
