In May 1940, Petain was appointed vice premier of France to boost morale because the country was crumbling under the force of Nazi invasion.
Instead, Petain made an armistice with the Nazis.The armistice was signed by the French on June 22 and went into effect on June 25.
More than half of France was occupied by Germans .
