13 Feb 1826 Jahr - American
Temperance
Society
Beschreibung:
In response to the preaching of Connecticut evangelist Lymon Beecher, Evangelical Christians in 1826 in Boston formed the first national society that advocated complete abstinence from drinking alcohol. By 1834 some 5000 state and local temperance societies were loosely associated with the American Temperance Society. This movement cut against the grain of American culture because passing the jug every few hours was a common way to get through the day at the shop.
