29 Jun 1731 Jahr - Great Awakening
Beschreibung:
A rousing religious revival of spirituality and emotional expressions of religion that exploded in the colonies in the 1730's and 1740's. Central to this awakening was the open-air camp meetings (revival meetings) which used theatrical and emotional preaching to evoke conversions, repentance, faith and submission of one's life to God. Most noteworthy among those who instigated and promoted this movement were Jonathon Edwards and George Whitfield. Whitfield's eloquence and voice made him an orator of rare ability. This movement undermined the authority of the existing clergy.
