Jackson was a prominent civil rights activist and ran for the Democratic presidential nomination both 1984 and 1988. He energized many voters, especially Black Americans, Latinos, and poor white communities. Jackson won 11 primary contests and received over 6 million votes, a major milestone for a Black presidential candidate at the time. At the Democratic National Convention Jackson received 1,218 delegate votes but did not secure the party’s nomination.
