1 Jan 1521 Jahr - Kidnapping of Francisco de Chicora
Beschreibung:
In 1521, Spanish slavers Francisco de Gordillo and Pedro de Quexos kidnapped around 60 Native Americans near the coast of present-day South Carolina, including a young man who became known as Francisco de Chicora. Taken to the Caribbean and then to Spain, he was baptized, learned Spanish, and became a servant and interpreter. He told wildly exaggerated stories about his homeland (which he called “Chicora”) — describing vast cities, giants, and gold — fueling Spanish dreams of colonization in the Southeast. His tales helped inspire failed expeditions like Ayllón’s in 1526.
