Esteban de Dorantes was an african slave and the first black person to visit the southwest of America. He was given the task to accompany Marcos de Niza alongside of other guides and people in the expedition to the mythical cities of “Tierra Nueva” in 1539 (also known as Cibola). He was known for his talent in communicating with the native people and was given the task to travel ahead to Cibola, in order to learn about the cities and its people there.
