21 Aug 1830 Jahr - Nat Turner's Rebellion (Aug 21-Aug 23, 1831)

Beschreibung:

Nat Turner, an enslaved preacher and self-proclaimed prophet, led what is considered one the most significant and deadliest slave revolt's in the history of the United States. Turner and his small army traveled through plantations in Southampton County, Virginia and killed approximately 55-60 people from slave owning families with the ultimate goal of sparking an even bigger, mass rebellion across the South, arming other slaves and allies to topple the institution of slavery. The revolt lasted 48 hours, and many of Turner's followers were killed the next day in battle by local forces. Turner managed to escape but was eventually caught, tried, convicted, and executed via hanging on November 11, 1831. An attorney who represented many enslaved people throughout this time recorded and published Nat Turner's confession and story (Breen, 2020).

This rebellion led to growing fear by slaveowners and other white individuals which in turn led to violent retaliatory actions by white paramilitary forces. In retaliation, after the revolt, many forces were responsible for the killing and torture of hundreds of African Americans which included individuals who were not at all involved with the revolt and even those who had tried to stop the revolt. This allowed white individuals to murder innocent African Americans free of consequence by claiming they thought the individual was a rebel (Breen, 2020).

In the courts, those suspected of partaking in the rebellion were subjected to trials without a jury before a panel of slave owning judges, where all were convicted and subjected to the death penalty, with only a few being recommended to have a death sentence commuted due to an extenuating circumstance. This revolt also led to stricter slave laws and enhanced slave codes.
