Based on Elizabeth Key Grinstead's case, Virginia passed an act to clarify the status of children born to women of African descent. This legal doctrine was known as "partus sequitur ventrem," meaning "that which is born follows the womb." This act imposed lifelong hereditary bondage on Africans and stated that a child would be “bond or free according to the condition of the mother,” rather than the father.
