With sanctions placed on trade with Syria following the start of the civil war and a CIA operation to arm and train rebels, the US along with other countries officially launches a campaign in Syria targeting the ISIS takeover and intending to remove Assad from power.

This US campaign continues today, escalating with direct attacks on Syrian government officials via airstrikes in 2017.
