On January 25, 1972, Chisholm announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first Black person and the first woman to seek a major party’s nomination. Running under the slogan “Unbought and Unbossed,” she won 152 delegates, raised issues of racial and gender equality, and voiced support for LGBTQ rights before suspending her campaign in June 1972.
