This amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gives affirmative action a stronger legal foundation. It expands the authority of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), allowing it to file lawsuits against employers in federal court for violating anti-discrimination laws. The Act also broadens the scope of protection by including more types of employers, such as state and local governments, schools, and labor unions. Discrimination is prohibited on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), and national origin.
