Back in 1941, the idea of a "march for jobs" was first conceptualized to protest racial discrimination in the job market. Later, the idea of a march for freedom was also considered, and the 1963 March on Washington (or March on Civil Rights) combined the two ideas into one. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the key organizers and speakers and his "I Have a Dream" speech is widely considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in history. Over 260,000 people from all over America participated in the March, thus making it a key event in the fight to secure jobs and freedom for African Americans.
