The American Ant-Slavery Society was the primary activist organization for the abolition of slavery. The society was founded in 1833 and dissolved in 1870 and among the founding members were William Lloyd Garrison, Arthur Tappan, and Theodore S. Wright. In 1839 the organization split over internal differences regarding the organizational responsibility and the differing beliefs whether or not the U.S. Constitution supported slavery. Garrison and his followers were on the more radical side whereas the Tappan brothers were part of the less radical wing and formed the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in the 1840s and '50s.
