17 Mai 1954 Jahr - Brown v. Board of Education
Beschreibung:
In 1951, after Oliver Brown's daughter was denied access to a nearby white school and was instead told to enroll in a far away African American school, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) filed a lawsuit in which it argued that segregation violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. The court initially ruled against it, but when the case was reargued in 1954, with four more cases added to the lawsuit, it was decided that the "separate but equal" doctrine did not apply to public schools and indeed disadvantaged African American children. In the following year, it was decided that public schools should be desegregated. However, this did not immediately take effect and as a result many protests, such as the "Little Rock Nine", erupted in the following years. Nonetheless, Brown v. Board of Education is widely considered to mark an important milestone towards desegregation.
