9 years after Texas declared independence, Texas would be annexed by the United States, for a variety of reasons. For one, the delay behind the annexation was in part due to the tensions in slavery that would create divide in the region, as well as risk of getting into war with Mexico. As for the reasoning for annexation itself, since it was a new sovereign entity, it faced many economic and political challenges, making joining the United States all the more appealing to the new sovereign nation. The annexation of Texas would contribute to the Civil War by significantly increasing sectional tensions in the US, as the state was a slave state.
