After WW1, soldiers came home to no special treatment, including no pension, no special medical services, and high unemployment. many smaller businesses were thriving due to war. many starting demanding high wages and better working conditions. In Winnipeg 1919, there was a general strike in the city. All workers went on strike together. Many business owners and politicians didn't stand with the strike because they were the ones being affected. The Winnipeg Strike was the largest strike in Canadian history, although eventually some strike leaders were sent to jail, ultimately ending up with employees working again. A man, J.S. Woodsworth was elected MP, meaning he could fight for workers rights in parliament. J.S. Woodsworth was one of the leaders of the strike, who did not support the first world war. In 1932, Woodsworth became one the the first leaders of a socialist political party, the Co-operative Commonwealth Confederation(CCF) which is now known as the New Democratic Party.
