The Great Depression started in early 30's. The Great Depression was a time where no one had money, everyone lost jobs, there was little food imports coming in, and a very dark time for all. The Great Depression was caused by a crash in New York's stock market by 39%, this created a domino effect for all markets. The birthrate had decreased to an all-time low since the 1880's. Immigrants stopped moving into Canada, knowing the dollar was in deprivation. Almost 30,000 immigrants were sent back to their own country(mostly due to lack of jobs available). Unemployment extended across the nation, and the federal government refused to provide work for all jobless, as well as a terrible welfare system built. The Prime Minister, Mackenzie King didn't seem to have a desire to recognise the situation. between 1932-36, relief camps for the jobless were created by the federal government. each man would be paid 0.20 cents a day to work. As the people continued working, they got furious with the outcome of money they received. In 1935, riots over the matter broke out.
