12 März 1947 Jahr - The Truman Doctrine

Beschreibung:

The Greek and Turkish governments crumbled at the end of 1946 and the beginning of 1947. After sustaining heavy damage from the Nazi occupations in areas of these countries the countries were having trouble rebuilding. Corresponding with the economic lull following the war there was a large influence from surrounding social revolutions and push for social change. Events such as the Russian Revolution at the beginning of the 20th century and the Spanish Revolution before the Second World War created a precedent for the communist revolution. This precedent led to the creation of the National Liberation Front party in Greece. Simultaneously in Turkey, the USSR pushed to gain shared control of the Dardanelle Straights. So for Greece to “Survive as a free nation.” (Address of the President of The United States, March 12, 1947) the U.S.A. needed to step in and give financial support. On March 12, 1947, Truman asked Congress and was allowed a 400 million dollar financial and military support plan for Greece and Turkey.
The Truman Doctrine was pivotal in the Cold War because it marked the beginning of the “Domino Theory.” This theory states that if and when free nation-states fall to Communism, more surrounding states will follow in their path, leading to a “domino effect” of spreading Communism.
