20-year-old Specialist William R. Bonner with the 198th Infantry Brigade triggers an explosive booby trap during night patrol, killing himself and mortally wounding 4 others.
Booby traps of the Vietnam War, primarily used by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers, are notably some of the most devastating in history, accounting for 11% of deaths and 17% of injuries during the war. Many traps which are left untriggered following the resolution of the war are still active today, continuing to take civilian lives. More than 40,000 people have died to these leftover traps since the end of the Vietnam War.
