19 Aug 1942 Jahr - Dieppe Raid
Beschreibung:
The Dieppe raid happened on august 19 1942 in German occupied France. Canadian soldiers had not seen much battling during the time of the war this along with other reasons like it would get the allies a foothold in Europe and they would also see what the fortifications were like if they did a larger invasion is why they did this attack on Dieppe. This assault was very unsuccessful and led to many casualties for the allies. There were a few main reasons it was unsuccessful. The book Canadians at war says that when preparing to land on the beach the command ship exchanged shots with a German convoy that alerted the Germans on the mainland 30 minutes before allied forces would land. There was also a lack of communication between soldiers on the beach and commanders on battleships which could have saved more lives if they knew what was going on. After this much changed in the war for the allies they learned how they should improve when doing beach landings like using more firepower from offshore battleships as well as more communication between everyone involved.
