After Jame curses Lily with an experimental curse they developed that make the target look like a horrid caracature of Snape, resulting in Lily's hair turning black and overly oily, Remus turns against his friends, taking Severus' side because this was crossing a line, James was just being petty and taking out his frustration of Lily rejecting him.
