The terrible defeat of the Russians in the war against Japan led people to revolt. To appease them, Tsar Nicholas II was forced to accept a constitution and allow for the formation of a Duma (parliament). However, once he had regained power, he went back to being an absolute monarch, inciting people to being plotting a revolution once more.
