Tom Geisbert is an intern at USAMIRRD at Fort Derrick, he requests permission from Peter Jahrling to look at the samples of monkeys from the Reston Facility. A few days after Peter Jahrling took a look at the samples, Geisbert inspects them and notices that the cells are unrecognizably sick. He asks Jahrling to give another opinion. Jahrling brushes it off and says that the sample must have been contaminated by bacteria. Both scientists sniff the sample to see if there is a bacterial odor.
After a weekend hunting trip, Tom Geisbert is not satisfied with the diagnosis by Peter Jahrling and decides to take a closer look at the samples. He puts the samples under a microscope and discovers that each cell is covered in a rope-like virus. He thinks it may be Marburg, then realizes that he and Jahrling both inhaled bits of it.
