The military branch USAMIRRD is contacted because there are concerns the disease which is affecting the monkeys is worse than they expected. The person put on the case is Peter Jahrling, a virologist at the Institute who specializes in monkey viruses. The Reston Facility sends samples of Monkey 053, but packages them poorly.
Peter Jahrling is shocked that the samples are only kept in tin foil upon arrival. After he inspects the spleen and throat samples he also unconfidently diagnoses the monkeys with SHF.
