The book focuses on a "Monkey House" in the year 1989, in Reston, Virginia. The house is known officially as The Reston Primate Quarantine Unit and is owned by Hazelton Research Products, a company which deals business in the imports and sales of wild animals. A few days later, a shipment of 100 wild monkeys arrived in Reston, Virginia, from the Phillipines. When they got to the Reston Primate Quarantine Unit, two of the monkeys were dead. The rest of the 98 monkeys were split between 12 holding rooms throughout the facility.
