The Battle of France, also known as the Fall of France, occurred in 1940 when Germany defeated the Allies and conquered France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The German side conducted two main operations: Fall Gelb and Fall Rot. German armored units broke through the Ardennes during Fall Gelb, also known as Case Yellow, stopping the advance of Allied forces into Belgium. After the British evacuated troops, on June 5, Fall Rot started. French units fought, but they were ultimately defeated ,and on June 14, German forces took control of Paris. France was divided and occupied by Germany, Italy, and the neutral Vichy government. There were 1,900,000 people captured and 360,000 deaths overall.The Battle of France in 1940 marked the first significant use of top light machine guns, including Germany's MG34, the British Bren gun, and the French Modèle 24/29.
