The experiment was launched at the end of 2023. France's first regional hybrid train was put into service on the lines of the Toulouse rail hub. An experiment lasting almost four months that is proving to be full of promise. More than 8,000 kilometers travelled without damaging its carbon footprint. On Saturday April 6, 2024, it was time for the first assessment of the regional hybrid train experiment in Occitanie. After three and a half months of rotation on the lines of the Toulouse rail hub, the lights remain green: the hybrid train does indeed save energy and limit greenhouse gas emissions. It was a national first. In December 2023, France's first hybrid train left Toulouse Matabiau station for almost four months of commercial service on non-electrified lines in the Occitanie region.

And this innovative train has lived up to its promise. Initial results show that the train, some of whose combustion engines have been replaced by batteries, "can deliver the same performance as trains in service", say the SNCF and the Region.

They also confirm that the braking energy recovery rate is around 90%, in line with the target of a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
