Less polluting and more energy-efficient, the first French hybrid train is on track and has already proven itself after more than 8,000 kilometers traveled since its commercial launch in mid-December 2023.
The energy recovery rate during braking reaches around 90% with the target of a 20% reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The experiment, which has been running for nearly four months, is therefore proving to be very promising.

Developed over several months by the experts of SNCF Voyageurs' Matériel Engineering and the teams of the French manufacturer Alstom, this "new generation" train is the first project to hybridize a TER automotrice in France.

It made its commercial debut in December 2023 and will be operated in the 4 partner regions: Grand-Est, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie and Centre-Val de Loire.

But how does this electric/thermal/battery hybrid train work?

In fact, it uses several sources of energy depending on the situation:

Electric supply via catenary,
Thermal engines,
Energy stored in batteries.
In these Régiolis bimodal trains, which initially operated on electricity and diesel, half of the thermal engines are replaced by high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.

These batteries recover the braking energy, instead of losing it as heat, and use it for the train's traction, lighting and heating.

They also help to maintain the train's traction performance in case of low catenary voltage (under 1.5 kV catenary).

This new storage system is therefore far from anecdotal, as braking energy represents about 30% of the traction energy on the routes covered by Régiolis trains.

To ensure maximum energy availability, these batteries can also be recharged via the catenaries and the thermal engines.
