It's the first major merger in North American rail freight in more than two decades. After a soap opera that saw the two major players in Canadian rail freight, Canadian Pacific (CP) and Canadian National (CN), go head to head two years ago over the acquisition of the Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS), whose network stretches from the central United States to central Mexico, the US$31 billion (€28 billion) bid by the former was finally accepted in September 2021. All that remained was to obtain a favourable opinion from the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB), which was issued after a year and a half, on March 15.
