Rail freight operators under contract with SNCF Réseau (the railroad operator) will be able to terminate their electricity contracts from June 1 and switch to cheaper suppliers, the Ministry of Ecological Transition announced Friday. "At the request of Clément Beaune, Minister Delegate in charge of Transport, SNCF Réseau's board of directors has authorized rail freight operators to terminate their contracts from June 1 to subscribe to more attractive market offers for the rest of the current year," the ministry wrote in a statement.

The current contracts took into account prices negotiated in the summer of 2022, when energy costs were at particularly high levels. "On January 1, 2019, we were at 45 euros per megawatt hour, on January 1, 2023 it was 471 euros," explained to AFP Franck Tuffereau, general delegate of the French Association of Rail (Afra), which brings together the competitors of the SNCF. "We were heard by the Ministry of Transport with great difficulty, it's been several months that we are fighting, since October 2022, since the announcement of the official tariff of SNCF Réseau," said Franck Tuffereau.

Since then, while prices have deflated, the contracts already committed prevented the rail companies from taking advantage of more favorable rates. According to the ministry, "at current market conditions, it is estimated that companies could be supplied between 150 and 200 euros/MWh". "This makes it possible to reduce losses. We had railway companies for whom it would have cost less money to stop circulating than to continue operating," added the Afra spokesman. For his part, the minister welcomed a measure offering operators "the means to be competitive again". The conditions of application of the measure will soon be communicated to the operators concerned, SNCF Réseau told AFP.
