U.S. researchers have developed a method that uses light and inexpensive, earth-abundant materials to make decarbonized hydrogen from liquid ammonia.

Ammonia has been invited into the research and development of hydrogen mobility for a reason. It is easy to imagine cars, light commercial vehicles and even trucks with a fuel cell filling their tanks from compressed H2 gas dispensers installed in stations that are ultimately very similar to those that deliver gasoline and diesel fuel.

For large ships and airplanes, such a scenario seems neither desirable nor even conceivable. The space taken up by the containers would be too large and the volumes taken on board too dangerous. Hence the use of liquid ammonia, which is easy to store and transport and is becoming increasingly popular for air and water travel. With the chemical formula NH3, this product is composed of 3 hydrogen molecules for one nitrogen molecule, which can be split into 2 gases by catalysis.
