On May 8, 1945, commemorated as Victory in Europe Day or V-E Day, jubilant celebrations erupted worldwide to mark the conclusion of World War II in Europe.

The conflict had endured for nearly five years before U.S. and Allied forces landed on the shores of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. This pivotal invasion marked the onset of the demise for Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. In less than a year, Germany capitulated, and Hitler met his demise.

However, in his address to the nation on V-E Day, President Harry S. Truman cautioned that the Allies must continue their efforts to "bring an end to the war" by defeating the Japanese in the Pacific.
