Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia (FCAB), the freight rail unit of Chilean copper holding company Antofagasta plc, will incorporate the first green hydrogen-based locomotive into its fleet.

The engine is expected to start operating in 2024 and will reduce CO2 emissions by 30%, FCAB said in a statement on Wednesday. It was acquired from a Chinese consortium made up of CRRC Qishuyan and Anhui Technology Import and Export Co, and has the same power and traction capabilities as current diesel-powered locomotives.

The new locomotive will have high safety standards, gas detection systems and automatic supply cut-off in case of leaks, FCAB said. The company’s CEO Katharina Jenny said the objective is to convert the whole fleet to green hydrogen.

"FCAB has 83 GT42 and C23 model locomotives," said Nadeska Garcés, who is in charge of communications at FCAB. They are used to transport copper concentrates, anodes, cathodes and sulfuric acid, among others, for the main mining companies in northern Chile.
