ÖBB will be equipping its Cityjet trains from the Siemens Desiro ML series with new software so that they can be put in so-called ‘sleep mode plus’. The installation campaign should be completed by mid-2023.

According to ÖBB, trains are parked for an average of 8 hours per day. During this time, they are not completely shut off. By enabling sleep mode plus, energy savings while stationary can reach up to 21,000 kW per day. By fitting all its 200 Cityjets with the new software, ÖBB estimates it can save the equivalent of the energy use of 1,900 Austrian households on a yearly basis.

Sleep mode plus can also help reduce noise pollution, ÖBB claims. For example, the compressor won’t engage at night or when sleep model plus is engaged. This will only happen when trains need to be activated ahead of service. There will be exceptions, though. Mainly when outside temperatures drop to near freezing. In such a scenario, the trains will have to be activated in order protect the water-bearing systems on board.
