A prototype of the hydrogen fuel-cell-powered tram being developed by HeiterBlick with partners could run on the streets of Chemnitz as early as 2023. It is understood that the low-floor design is to be based upon the HeiterBlick/Kiepe offering for Leipzig, Görlitz and Zwickau; a EUR600m contract for up to 155 trams for the three undertakings was placed in December 2021.

One of Germany’s smaller tram manufacturers, HeiterBlick is working with local company Hörmann Vehicle Engineering, which is developing methods to use waste heat generated by the fuel cell to operate heating and air-conditioning systems. The project also includes fuel cell specialist Wätas from nearby Olbernhau.

In a related development, construction is to start this year on Chemnitz’s Hydrogen and Mobility Innovation Centre, (HIC) in which EUR60m is to be invested by 2025. Located at the technology campus of the city’s technical university, this facility will create 80-100 jobs.

Franz Salzwedel, Managing Director of Hörmann, said: “This will be a research and development provider for companies that cannot afford their own facilities. The mostly medium-sized companies will later find test stands, laboratories, platforms as well as machines and systems, always with the latest technology.”

The HIC is to be operated using renewable energy – and its own hydrogen supply.
