15 lugl 1741 anni - Russians Discover Alaskan Peninsular

Descrizione:

Since around the 1740s, a small number of Russian sailors had been making their way from Siberia across the Bering Sea and reaching islands off the coast of modern-day Alaska. Eventually, they came across the mainland of North America itself and soon started collecting valuable furs, or pelts. The discovery of the quality furs prompted the Russians to begin settlements in the New World, and soon the first trading post was established on Kodiak Island in 1784.

Unfortunately, history repeated itself once again as many Russians quickly enslaved the indigenous people they came across, known as the Aleuts. The Aleuts were forced to hunt marine life for the Russians in a number of places before the Europeans eventually attempted to form more peaceful relationships with them. Elsewhere on the peninsular, some Russian traders managed to easily coexist with native tribes, however, tensions grew hostile more often than not as competition for resources grew evermore.
