Mao was becoming more open to debate, despite punishing intellectuals just a few years previously. In 1957, Mao announced he wanted 'a hundred flowers to bloom.' In essence, Mao was encouraging free speech and intellectuals to point out where the government had gone wrong.
Reasons for Campaign:
- Without intellectual thought, academia and industry was severly stagnating.
- Mao wanted to shake up CCP to see who was not loyal.
- Soviet invasion of Hungary demonstrated what would happen if the citizens did not support the ideals of the communist government.
Consequences:
- Criticism grew, and was directed towards Mao
- Mao ended the campaign and moved towards Anti-Rightist campaign, where critics were labelled as rightists and forced to confess evil thoughts.
