Since the establishment of Jamestown, more and more colonist arrived in the New World until eventually thirteen large distinct colonies were established, covering almost the entire North American East Coast .
The last of these colonies was the Province of Georgia which was legally established in 1732. At this point the entire population of the colonies totalled just over half a million people, the majority of which where Protestant English-speakers. Their politics and legal system were similar throughout the colonies and although London attempted to exercise more control over them, the Thirteen Colonies managed to maintain a high degree of self-governance.
Many Native Americans that formally occupied the land were displaced and forced to move West, or died in wars with the colonists as well as from the European diseases.
